En route to and from NYC for a shoot, I spent 9 hours behind the wheel yesterday. I love long drives and the solitude one gets from the experience, if not the effect on my back. It was really foggy and somewhat rainy making it a tad more surreal than usual in the dark portion home. As I pulled into the rest area on 95 south, I saw this and took the time top unpack my camera to capture the moment. And he is no doubt still on the road today.

I was recently asked to shoot David Thomas, the new Dean of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business to announce his new position there. What a building...beautiful natural light and a great subject made my job a great experience!

NEA and the Poetry Foundation put on POETRY OUT LOUD, a national poetry recitation contest for high school students across the country. In this national competition, state champions compete for the national title and a large prize. I am shooting this again for these two days at the Lincoln Theatre.

Also from our honeymoon trip to India some years back...we ran into a truckload of villagers on their way to a festival all covered with this yellow powder. The traffic had jammed to a stop so I got out and went up the truck. When I asked one man what the yellow was for he told me..."it is to show that we are having fun", which judging by the looks on these ladies faces, was good to know!

I did a shoot recently for Government Executive Magazine of Jeff Zients, the governments Chief Performance Officer . I wanted to try a specific look and was pleased with the results. I like the effect of the light on the one where he is smiling, but the need for a more businesslike look I think won over for the cover

Had a shoot yesterday and shot Mike Starghill who was helping me out to test some light. So this AM as I was downloading the shoot, I started playing with the image. This is what I came up with and kind of liked the effect. Mike is becoming a great sports photographer, honing his craft in the venue of DC high school sports at every opportunity. Three days with a Sadhu in Varanasi

A few years back, I spent some time in Varanasi, India wandering along the banks of the Ganges and taking it all in. I sat next to a sadhu on the wall one morning in the morning sun and began a converstion of sorts. After some time, he had seen my camera and the look I apparently had and asked me if I wanted to take his picture. I said yes so we went across the Ganges in a boat as he didn't want to draw attention. I ended up spending the next three days traveling a few towns with he and his other sadhu companion, eating at great inexpensive out of the way places and wandering places it would not have occured to me to wander. He had given up his worldly life in the mid 70's for a spiritual quest but when asked about family he said he had a sister who worried about him and a brother who was a professional photographer in Rajasthan, which he then admitted was why he didn't mind the pictures. It was a fascinating three days and I particularly like these images of him as we crossed the river.

This is an image I shot a few years back on.......film....

Atlantic City's "Around the Island Swim" a 22.5 mile swim around Absecon Island. It is very much a community event in that local guards and other enthusiasts row these lifeguard boats around, one to a swimmer, to crew for the swimmers who have raced this course since the 1960s.

I had competed in the swim many years and finally had the chance to be a spectator and see it from a different perspective.

With Linz and Shep out of town for a night, I asked Jesse if he wanted to play, go fishing or go camping. He said he wanted to go camping which made me happy. The light in the AM through the tent made me grab my camera. And now I will never forget that moment.

Crabbing on the Severn

Crabbing on the Severn. Our neighborhood had a two day 'tournament' to try and catch enough crabs to feed the neighborhood. I am learning and trot lining is the method a lot of people use to catch crabs, tying chicken necks along the line to bait the crabs onto the line. The activity involved a few 'captains meeting' to discuss the rules and to tie the necks onto the line. Some left early as 4 AM to get to their preferred destination.

The crabs need to be large enough to keep and male so a lot are tossed back. Everyone has a tool to measure them and a bushel basket to toss them into.

The search for a 1950's vintage truck for an upcoming shoot has led me to some nice interactions. I went to the weekly "lost in the 50's" car meet Glenn Burnie Maryland Saturday night in search of such a truck. While I did not find the EXACT truck I was looking for, I really enjoyed walking the parking lot of Marley Station mall where hundreds of vintage cars were parked.

Another from the Photoweek DC slideshow this image is looking out the train window upon arrival on an overnight train into Dadar station, in Mumbai, India. The porters peer into the smokey windows trying to find their next job. An overnight train trip in India is full of sounds of sellers selling, passengers hustling, sweepers sweeping, vendors vending, and loudspeakers speaking. All in the awkward confines of the carful of strangers and between dreams. It draws you into your head to make some sense out of it. This image to me was a perfect end to such a night.

As part of Photoweek DC I was lucky enough to show a slideshow. I showed images which I have had for awhile and that I am attached to, but haven't had a real audience. This shipbreaking yard here in Alang, Gujurat, India is one such place. It took a hours of waiting and convincing to be allowed in for an hour at high noon under armed escort, but I like the result.
